Analects of Confucius

Chapter 1 – Xue Er

1.1: 子曰:「學而時習之,不亦說乎?有朋自遠方來,不亦樂乎?人不知而不慍,不亦君子乎?」

1.1: Zi yue: “Xue er shi xi zhi, bu yi yue hu? You peng zi yuan fang lai, bu yi le hu? Ren bu zhi er bu yun, bu yi zhun zi yue?”

1.1: The Master says: “To study and then constantly put into practice, is this not also pleasing/fulfilling? To have friends arrive from far away places, is this not also joyous? People do not know, yet (he) is not indignant, is this not a sage?”

1.2: 有子曰:「其為人也孝弟,而好犯上者,鮮矣;不好犯上,而好作亂者,未之有也。君子務本,本立而道生。孝弟也者,其為仁之本與!」

1.2: You zi ri: “Qi wei ren ye xiao ti, er hao fan shang zhe, xian yi; bu hao fan shang, er hao zuo luan zhe, wei zhe you ye. Zhun zi wu ben, ben wei er dao sheng. Xiao ti ye zhe, qi wei en zhe ben yu!”

1.2: You Rou said: “Those who are filial and who also harm those above (their superiors) are few indeed. Disliking to harm those above and yet also liking to cause disorder, there is not yet one (such as this). The sage attends to the root/basis, the root/basis is established/standing, and dao/way is born. One who is filial, this is the root of humaneness!”

I am intentionally leaving the translation less refined in order to more accurately reflect two elements of the Chinese that I think are useful: first, many words have multiple meanings and a single translation may not be suitable for some terms. Hence the use of / to designate multiple meanings. Second, I enjoy the abbreviated nature of the original classical Chinese - I suspect the phrases had a performative element, as if they were being pronounced to a group of listeners, or as if being used in debate.
